Air Bag Systems: Description and Operation

Circuit Description
Beginning with the 1990 model year, all Audi 80, 80 Quattro, 90 and 90 Quattro models are equipped with a driver-side airbag housed in the steering wheel assembly. Coupe Quattro models after VIN 8B_LA 001 109 are similarly equipped.

After switching the ignition "On", the airbag warning light will light for approximately ten seconds while the system goes through an electronic test cycle. The system is ready when the warning light goes out.

WARNING: The airbag is an explosive device. To prevent personal injury or airbag system failure,ONLY AUDI-TRAINED PERSONNEL should disassemble, assemble or service the airbag system.

The airbag system must never be tested with a test light or voltmeter. Test the airbag system in an installed condition only, using Audi Special Tool VAG 1619.

Airbag system components must not be opened or repaired. Always use new parts.

Do not place any stickers or covering on the steering wheel of an airbag-equipped car.

WARNING: Always disconnect the voltage supply to the airbag system during all work on the airbag system, or when doing other repairs requiring removal of airbag components.

Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable and cover the battery terminal. Also separate the red, single-pin connector (marked "airbag") behind the instrument panel to disconnect the airbag voltage supply.
