Performing Basic Settings MPI Engine Management
Model(s):
Coupe/90 Qu. 20V
Up to 03/90 Production
Condition
Basic settings out of adjustment.
Service
Prior to 03/90 production, there are three different methods that can be used to set basic engine settings:
1. Connect the 1551 Scan Tool to the Data Link Connectors in the driver's side footwell. Press and hold the arrow button on the 1551 Scan Tool until the display "permanent ground exciter wire" appears.
2. Insert a fuse in the top of the fuel pump relay.
Using one of these two methods will cause the following:
- Ignition timing is stabilized
- Idle air control valve is fixed at a constant position
- Oxygen sensor control shut off (system goes into open loop)
- The carbon canister shut-off valve is closed
- The coolant temperature sensor is fixed at 176~F (80~C)
The basic engine settings can now be adjusted using a CO Meter and the VW 1367 or it's equivalent.
Refer to microfiche repair manual 80/90/Coupe, group 24, page 25-395-2 for adjustment procedures.
After 03/90 production date refer to microfiche Repair Manual 80/90/Coupe, Group 24, D-380 for engine basic adjustments.
Note
In model year 1990, there are the different systems used on the 20 valve 5 cylinder engine.
Up to 03/90 production, the MPI system can be identified by the Hitachi idle air control valve (#1) as well as a stainless steel exhaust manifold (#2).
From production date 03/90, the idle air control valve (#3) is a Bosch part and the exhaust manifold is cast iron (#4).
