Wiper and Washer Systems: Description and Operation

Circuit Description
Power for the washers and wipers is supplied via fuse #15 (S15) on the main fuse/relay panel. The washer/wiper intermittent relay controls a two speed wiper motor.

The washer/wiper intermittent switch also actuates the windshield washer pump. Beginning with 1989 models the system includes washer nozzle heaters.

The headlight washer system has a headlight washer system relay, a headlight washer pump, and connections to the headlight switch and washer/wiper intermittent relay.

Coupe Quattro models are equipped with a rear window wiper motor and rear window washer pump controlled by the rear window wiper washer relay. Power for these components is supplied via fuse #18 (S18). On these models, the washer/wiper intermittent switch includes the rear window wiper switch.


WARNING: The driver-side airbag is an explosive device. Before removing the steering wheel or steering column switches, always disconnect the airbag voltage supply connector, refer to "Air Bag Systems" for more information.
