MPI Under Hood Component Layout (Before March 1990):

Numbers in diagram refer to the components listed below.

1. AIR MASS SENSOR: Located between the air filter housing and the air duct to the intake manifold.

2. CARBON CANISTER SHUT-OFF VALVE: Located just in front of the engine coolant reservoir.

3. CARBON CANISTER FREQUENCY VALVE: Located in front of the engine coolant reservoir, just in front of the carbon canister shut-off valve.

4. CONNECTOR BRACKET FOR ENGINE SENSORS: Located on the left side of the fire wall in the engine compartment.

5. COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR: Located on the rear of the cylinder head, right side.

6. CRANKSHAFT POSITION (REFERENCE) SENSOR: Located on the left rear of the engine block where the engine and transmission join.

7. ENGINE SPEED SENSOR: Located on the left rear of the engine block where the engine and transmission join, next to the reference sensor.

8. FUEL INJECTORS: Located on the left side of the cyl. head, installed in the intake manifold runners nearest the cylinder head.

9. FUEL PUMP RELAY: Located in position #10 of the fuse/relay panel (left side of the plenum just in front of the windshield).

10. IDLE STABILIZER VALVE: Located on the air filter housing.

11. IDLE SWITCH AND THROTTLE VALVE POTENTIOMETER: Located on the throttle valve assembly at the rear of the intake manifold common chamber, right side.

12. IGNITION COIL WITH POWER OUTPUT STAGE: Located on the center of the fire wall, directly behind the engine.

13. IGNITION DISTRIBUTOR WITH HALL SENSOR: Located on the rear of the cylinder head, left side,

14. KNOCK SENSOR #1: Located on the left side of the engine block, between cyls. #1 & #2.

15. KNOCK SENSOR #2: Located on the left side of the engine block, nearest cyl. #4.

16. MPI ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU): Located in the passenger compartment, above the right side footwell, behind the A/C evaporator.

17. SERIES RESISTOR PACK: Located in the left side of the plenum, just in front of the windshield, next to the fuse relay panel.

OXYGEN SENSOR (not identified in diagram):
Located on the exhaust header pipe at the rear of the collector where all the header tubes come together.
