Suspension Strut, Repairing

Front suspension strut, repairing

Wheel hub, removing:






Press out wheel hub

Wheel hub, installing:






Press in wheel hub

Press out wheel bearing:






Note: When pressing in, tool VW 455 must only support bearing inner race

Bearing inner race, removing:






Note: Use only extractor with tensioning strap 30-11

Pull off bearing inner race

Wheel bearing, installing:






Note: Large inside radius of wheel bearing points toward wheel hub. Wheel bearing housing must not be greased before pressing in wheel bearing. Beveled side of special tool 3144 points toward special tool VW-204 b.

Press in wheel bearing as far as possible

Damping ring, lug identification:






Note: When replacing coil springs, damping ring with 2 lugs 15 mm (0.60 in.) thick (arrow) should be installed. If it is necessary to compensate for differences in height on left and right sides, damping rings are available with 1 lug = 19 mm (0.75 in) thick and 3 lugs = 9 mm (0.35 in) thick.

Suspension strut, positioning in spring tensioner:






Install tensioner V.A.G. 1403, US 1117, or equivalent
Compress coil spring
Remove nut from piston rod
Release coil spring
Remove components

Self-locking nut, tightening:






Tighten nut with torque wrench 3078
