Use the following procedure to accurately check the fluid level in the 4-speed 018 automatic transmission.
Note
The transmission fluid level only needs to be checked when diagnosing a suspected transmission problem.
Always check the transmission fluid level with the vehicle level, transmission at operating temperature, selector lever in "Park" position and with the engine idling.
Transmission fluid, checking temperature
Preferred method
^ remove dipstick plug Part No. 018 321 431 E
^ use tool VAG 1558 to measure ATF temperature
^ must be: 60-80~C (140-176~F)
^ if fluid temperature is below 60~C (140~F) run engine until fluid temperature is between 60-80~C (140-176~F)
^ check fluid level
Alternate method (less accurate):
^ drive vehicle a minimum of 10 miles (with dipstick plug in place) in city stop and go traffic to allow transmission to reach approx. 60-80~F (140-176~F)
^ check fluid level
Transmission fluld, checking level
^ with engine idling and selector lever in "Park" position, measure the transmission fluid level using dipstick, Part No. 018 321 431 D
^ fluid level at operating temperature must be in shaded area shown in illustration
CAUTION Note that shaded area is only the lower half of the distance between the MAX and MIN marks on the dipstick.
^ add or remove transmission fluid to bring level into shaded area on dipstick
^ shaded area = 0.6 L (0.63 qt.)
CAUTION
DO NOT overfill the transmission.
^ remove dipstick and replace with plug, Part No. 018 321 431 E
