Toothed Belt - Adjustment

Subject: Toothed Belt Checking Adjustment every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) and 60,000 miles (96,000 km)

Model(s): V8 Quattro M.Y. 1990





(Supersedes Technical Bulletin 90-04, dated 09/30/90) (Also, see Service Circular Maintenance 04/89)

At 30,000 miles (48,000 km) and 60,000 miles (96,000 km) check toothed belt tensioning lever stop adjustment and physically inspect for wear and/or deterioration.

Checking

Caution Only turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation.


^ disconnect electric fan bolts (arrows).
^ lift fan out and place to one side in


^ remove poly ribbed belt





^ remove tooth belt guard, left side (arrows)

^ turn engine, check toothed belt for:
^ fraying edges
^ cracks
^ excessive vear on back of belt

If YES

Replace toothed belt





Adjusting

(engine cold, ambient temperature)


^ loosen bolt 1
^ insert tool 3204 (2) Into tensioner lever (3) so that tool engages recess on back of stop plate (4)


Note

A) If tool 3204 cannot be installed, or the stop plate mounting bolt 1 is at the end of slot, adjust the damper length to the basic setting as shown in V8 repair manual section 15-35.

B) If the belt tension procedure is performed, and the damper cannot be adjusted, install a new toothed belt.





^ firmly press tensioner lever once by hand in direction of arrow

^ tighten bolt 1 torque: 10 N-m (7 ft.lb.)
^ remove tool 3204
^ reinstall toothed belt guard torque:
^ 9 N-m (7 ft.lb.)
^ reinstall electric fan torque:
^ 10 N-m (7 ft.lb.)
