Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.2. Disconnect speedometer connection, then thermoswitch connection from transmission.
3. Remove engine and transmission upper bolts, then ground strap from transmission.
4. Install engine support assembly 10-222 A and 10-222 A/1 or equivalent, then remove front exhaust pipe.
5. Disconnect oxygen sensor, then remove catalytic converter.
6. Disconnect driveshaft from transmission, remove right side cover plate for transmission support.
7. Remove starter, then torque converter attaching bolts.
8. Remove right side transmission support, then selector lever cable retaining clip.
9. Disconnect ATF cooler lines, then support transmission with V.A.G. 1383 or equivalent.
10. Remove left side transmission support, lower engine and transmission bolts, then move driveshaft to rear of vehicle.
11. Separate transmission from engine, then lower and remove transmission.
12. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Check guide sleeves for proper alignment during installation.
b. Check and adjust selector lever cable is necessary.
c. Torque axle shaft to flange bolts to 59 ft. lbs., torque converter to plate bolts to 44 ft. lbs., transmission to engine bolts to 41 ft. lbs. and transmission to support bolts to 44 ft. lbs.
