Engine: Service and Repair
Engine is removed from vehicle without transmission. Do not disconnect wire to clutch operating cylinder, power steering hoses and brackets, or A/C hoses.1. On models with airbag,disable airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING.
2. On all models, disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
3. Disconnect clutch operating cylinder.
4. Remove power steering pump (with hoses connected) and attach to body.
5. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts and mount, then position aside. Tie compressor back with wire.
6. Drain cooling system, then disconnect radiator hoses.
7. Remove radiator, cowling, and fan.
8. Remove front bumper.
9. Remove center apron and lower crossmember.
10. Remove left upper engine to transmission bolt.
11. Remove distributor cap, then position aside.
12. Disconnect any electrical connectors to facilitate removal of engine.
13. Position support bar 10-222A or equivalent, on inner fender mounting area, then place tool 3147 or equivalent, through 10-222A, then into position on engine, taking care not to damage ignition wires. Attach draw hook. Transmission can be raised or lowered using wing nut of tool 3147.
14. Attach engine sling 2024A or equivalent, then support engine weight with crane.
15. Separate engine from transmission, then lift engine from vehicle.
16. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Check clutch release bearing for wear, replace if necessary. Lubricate release bearing and drive shaft.
b. Ensure dowels for centering engine and transmission are in cylinder block.
c. Replace self locking nuts for engine mounts, then lower engine onto mounts. Loosely install self locking nuts, then rock or shake engine on mounts to align.
d. adjust engine timing/idle, then align exhaust system, without tension.
e. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specifications.
