Timing Belt: Service and Repair
Fig. 8 Camshaft Timing Mark Location:
Crankshaft Timing Mark Location With Engine Installed:
1. Align mark on camshaft sprocket with upper edge of cylinder head cover gasket, Fig. 8, then TDC mark O with cast mark on bell housing, Fig. 9.
Fig. 10 Removing Vibration Dampener:
2. Remove alternator belt, then insert vibration dampener retainer 2084 or equivalent in vibration dampener and remove bolt using extension tool 2079 or equivalent, Fig. 10. Remove vibration dampener.
Fig. 11 Exploded View Of Timing Belt Assembly:
3. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers, Fig. 11.
4. Loosen bolts for water pump, then turn pump clockwise to loosen belt.
5. Remove old timing belt.
Fig. 12 Oil Pump Housing Reference Mark:
6. Install new timing belt with vibration dampener on crankshaft and align notch on pulley with reference mark on oil pump housing, Fig. 12.
7. Install lower timing belt cover, then the belt on water pump sprocket and camshaft sprocket. Ensure camshaft sprocket is still aligned with upper edge of cylinder head gasket.
8. Adjust belt tension by turning water pump counterclockwise, then tighten water pump bolts to specifications. Belt is tensioned correctly when belt can be twisted 90° in center between camshaft and intermediate sprockets.
9. Recheck adjustment, then install upper timing belt cover.
10. Tighten vibration dampener bolt to specifications using special tools, then install V-belt.
11. Inspect ignition timing and adjust if necessary.
