Subject: Transmission, Establishing Basic Setting

Model(s): 80/90/100 with 097 4-Speed Automatic Transmission 1991 M.Y.





Shift quality complaints can often be corrected by resetting the transmission control unit to its basic setting using the VAG 1551.

The basic setting procedure must be done when checking the on-board diagnosis system during or after the following:

^ Pre-delivery inspection
^ diagnosing customer complaints
^ whenever the battery has been disconnected
^ throttle replacement or throttle cable adjustment
^ transmission control unit replacement

Automatic transmission 097 control unit, returning to basic setting

^ road test vehicle to verify customer complaint, if applicable

^ connect VAG 1551 to terminals in driver's footwell black plug to black terminal in vehicle white plug to yellow terminal in vehicle





^ read display
^ switch ignition ON and activate rapid data transfer 01





^ read display
^ access address code 02 (transmission electronics)





^ read display
^ press Q key





^ read display
^ press --> key





^ read display
^ check fault memory by accessing code 02; if fault is displayed, it must be corrected and fault memory erased by using access code 05 (refer to Repair Manual, Group D3)





^ read display
^ press Q key





^ read display
^ if no faults are recognized press --> key





^ read display
^ initiate transmission basic setting by accessing code 04





^ read display
^ press Q key





^ read display
^ press 00, then press Q key





^ read display
^ recalibrate system by fully depressing the accelerator pedal to floor, hold for five (5) seconds and allow accelerator to return to rest position
^ press --> key





^ read display; system is now returned to basic setting


^ switch ignition OFF
^ disconnect VAG 1551

Note

When this procedure is performed at pre-delivery inspection, the vehicle must be driven as little as possible prior to delivery to the customer.

If basic setting was performed in response to a customer complaint, drive the vehicle to determine if basic setting corrected the complaint. If not, refer to Repair Manual Group D3.
