AUTO-CHECK SYSTEM, OPERATION

Note




When performing the display check for the Autocheck system, yellow and red displays should illuminate. If not, check relevant bulbs.

AUTO-CHECK CODE, CHECKING

Note
The Auto-check display check button is incorporated into the instrument panel dimmer switch.

^ switch ignition OFF

^ press and hold Auto-check display check button on instrument cluster

^ switch ignition ON

^ two-digit code appears in Auto-check display

first digit: number of cylinders




second digit: position of coding switch (see illustration)

Example:

62 = 6 cyl., USA, gasoline

Coding switch positions




^ adjust coding switch (arrow) to position 2 (USA) or position 3 (Canada)

General notes

See Repair Group 90 for instrument cluster and instrument cluster component removing/installing procedures.

See wiring diagrams and Repair Group 97 for locations of Auto-check system components in engine compartment.

If all specified values are obtained during troubleshooting and Auto-check system continues to malfunction,

^ replace Auto-check system/Board computer printed circuit board

If incorrectly formed symbols or lines appear on display,

^ replace Auto-check system/Board computer display unit

Before replacing a defective component,

^ check wiring to component for open/short circuits according to wiring diagram, repair as necessary

If Auto-check system display is dim,

^ check bulbs, see Repair Group 90 for bulb positions

Test conditions

^ battery OK

^ fuse S8 OK

^ fuse S15 OK

^ Auto-check system coding switch set properly

^ voltage stabilizer OK (checking, Repair Group 90)

^ use digital multimeter Fluke 83 (US 1119), connector test kit VW 1594, Test box VAG 1598, adaptor harness VAG 1598/4 and test adaptor VAG 1594/20 when performing electrical checks

^ always refer to appropriate wiring diagram when troubleshooting

Note
If available, use adaptor harness VAG 1598/13 in place of test adaptor VAG 1594/20.





























Instrument Cluster Tests


FREQUENCY DISPLAY, TROUBLESHOOTING




When the Auto-check system is not being used and the radio is on, the radio station frequency or the tape player in-use symbol will be displayed in the Autocheck display.

Example:

89.5 = radio frequency indicator

infinity (symbol) = stereo/mono indicator

FM2.4 = station select button indicator

TAPE = tape operation
