Head Restraint Upholstery Covers - Remove/Install

Head restraint upholstery covers, removing/installing

MODEL(s):
100 from 1992 m.y.

The following information will be added to the Audi 100 from 1992 Repair Manual - Body, Fiche No. 14, at the next filming.

HEAD RESTRAINT UPHOLSTERY COVERS, REMOVING/INSTALLING

REMOVING

- remove head restraint from seat




- push back wire bracket -1- with screwdriver and remove guide rod -2-




- make installation tool by grinding screwdriver tip to following dimensions:

a = 65 mm
b = approx. 5 mm

- file edges -1- and smooth with fine emery cloth

NOTE
The smoother the shaft surface the smaller the risk of damage to the head restraint covers.




- use modified screwdriver to pry clamping strips from fastening channel around entire head restraint

NOTE
If cover is already damaged pry out plastic clamping strip in center and separate.

INSTALLING

NOTE
New head restraint covers cannot be installed on earlier version head restraints. Mixed installation of new and early version covers is not possible.




- for head restraints from 01/92, clamping strip -1- must be locked into retaining tabs -3- of fastening channel -2-




- on head restraints up to 01/92, retaining tabs of clamping strip -1- must be locked into openings -3- of fastening channel -2-

- stretch both plastic clamping strips

NOTE
If necessary, the clamping strips can be warmed slightly with a heat gun to make installation easier.




- start at front side of head restraint and install clamping strip into three sides of mounting channel




- carefully pry clamping strip into mounting channel along fourth edge




- using screwdriver tool, press clamping strip securely into channel all around head restraint

- press other end of cover through head restraint frame and pull cover with force at all four corners

- place clamping strip over three corners of head restraint




NOTE
When installing the head restraint cover ensure that the seams of the cover lie in the grooves provided in the foam material.




- carefully pry fourth corner of clamping strip into channel with tool




- press clamping strip into channel securely with tool
