A/C Refrigerant System, Discharging
WARNING!- Automotive refrigerant containing CFC's is hazardous to the earth's atmosphere. To protect our environment, use an Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) approved refrigerant recovery/recycling unit such as Kent-Moore ACR or equivalent, whenever discharging an A/C system.
- Effective January 1, 1992 any person who services a motor vehicle air conditioner MUST, by law, be properly trained and certified and use approved refrigerant recycling equipment Technicians must complete an EPA approved recycling course to be certified.
- State and local governments may have additional requirements regarding air conditioning servicing. Always comply with state and local laws.
- Always wear safety goggles when charging or discharging system.
- Avoid inhaling fumes when using flame type leak detector. Refrigerant R-12 becomes poisonous gas after coming into contact with open flame.
NOTE: Follow safety precautions when discharging or charging A/C refrigerant system.
- Close both valves on A/C manifold gauge set.
- Remove low pressure switch -F73- to expose low pressure service valve.
- Connect hose -1- from low pressure gauge to low pressure service valve.
NOTE: As an alternate method, connect low pressure gauge to low pressure service valve on A/C compressor.
- Remove A/C refrigerant high pressure switch -F118- to expose high pressure service valve.
- Connect hose -3- from high pressure gauge to high pressure service valve.
NOTE: As an alternate method, connect high pressure gauge to high pressure service valve located beneath high pressure switch -F23-.
CAUTION!
Always follow manufacturer's instructions when using a refrigerant recovery/recycling unit.
- Connect manifold gauge hose -2- to intake connection -4- on refrigerant recovery/recycling unit -5-.
- Following refrigerant recovery/recycling unit manufacturer's instructions, discharge A/C system into refrigerant recovery/ recycling unit.
- Close manifold gauge valves when refrigerant is fully discharged.
CAUTION!
DO NOT leave A/C system open for a long period of time. Prolonged exposure to the air will contaminate the system and will require the replacement of certain A/C components (restrictor, accumulator, etc.).
- Disconnect power supply from A/C compressor clutch (for example, remove connector from high pressure switch -F118-) to prevent accidental compressor operation with A/C system discharged.
