TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 131

DATE: Sept 92

TRANSMISSION: VW, 010, 087, 089, 090

SUBJECT: Bind In Low And Reverse

APPLICATION: VW, Audi

VW - Audi

010, 087, 089, 090 Bind In Low/Reverse

Bind-up in manual low, bind-up in reverse, and second gear starts in drive, especially when hot are all results of a cross leak into the servo apply circuit. The source of the crossleak is usually a leaking accumulator piston seal. Replace the seals or piston as required.

DIAGNOSIS HINT:
Test drive the vehicle until it is hot. With the vehicle idling in neutral see if the car can be pushed (by hand) backwards. If the vehicle can be pushed forward, but not backwards turn the engine off and see if it can be pushed backwards with the engine off. A leaking accumulator piston will allow the vehicle to roll backwards with engine off but not with the engine running.
