Brakes and Traction Control: Adjustments

Parking brake cable must be free of tension during basic setting check.
1. Using a suitable screwdriver, push caliper lever against stop on both sides of vehicle. Parking brake cable is too tight if lever of opposite side caliper is pulled away from stop.
2. If necessary, loosen adjustment nut for parking brake cable until both levers rest against stop.
3. On models except Quattro, push a screwdriver of a least .236 inch diameter between rear hook of spring and roller.
4. Pump brake pedal with moderate force about 40 times (engine not running), and ensure both wheels rotate freely.
5. Remove screwdriver.
6. On Quattro models, different caliper types are identified by raised number on housing indicating piston diameter.
7. Models with 36 mm caliper piston, repeat step 4.
8. Models with 38 mm caliper piston, press brake pedal once, and ensure both wheels rotate freely.
