Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 3 Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:

1. On models with airbag, disable airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING.
2. On all models, disconnect battery ground cable, then drain engine coolant into suitable container.
3. Disconnect coolant hoses to cylinder head, then electrical connectors.
4. Remove alternator and A/C components as necessary.
5. Remove upper intake manifold, then disconnect or remove injection system components as necessary.
6. Remove front upper timing belt cover, then bring crankshaft to TDC cylinder No. 1 by aligning TDC mark O with cast mark on bell housing.
7. Loosen coolant pump mounting bolts, then turn pump clockwise to loosen timing belt. Remove belt from camshaft sprocket.
8. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
9. Remove cylinder head cover, then cylinder head bolts in reverse of sequence shown in Fig. 3.
10. Remove cylinder head from engine, then note position of gasket prior to removal.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install cylinder head gasket over locating dowel on cylinder block.
b. Tighten cylinder head bolts to specifications in sequence shown in Fig. 3.
c. Install timing belt, refer to TIMING BELT.
d. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specifications.
