Evaporative Emissions System: Description and Operation

Carbon Canister And Shutoff Solenoid:

Gravity Valve:

This system prevents fuel vapors from entering the atmosphere. The fuel vapors are stored in the charcoal canister while the engine is OFF. When the engine is started, the charcoal canister solenoid valve opens, which allows the vapors to be drawn into the intake manifold to be burned during normal combustion.

CHARCOAL CANISTER SHUT-OFF SOLENOID
Installed on top of the charcoal canister. When the engine is shut-off, the solenoid is de-energized and closes off the purge line between the carbon canister and intake air boot, preventing fuel vapors from collecting in the engine's intake tracts. When the engine is started, the fuel ECU will switch on the solenoid. Fuel vapors are now purged from the canister via the restrictor in the intake air boot elbow.
