Rear Brakes, Servicing

Rear wheel brake with automatic adjustment, servicing (S4/S6 models)

Parking brake, adjusting, refer to Parking Brake System

CAUTION: Install complete repair kit when rebuilding a caliper. The brakes can be checked on any standard commercial dynamometer providing drive roller speed does not exceed 5.5 km/h (3 mph). Before checking the brakes on the dynamometer, make sure the differential lock is switched off.






1. Self-locking bolt 35 Nm (26 ft lb)
Always replace
When loosening and tightening, hold guide bolt

2. Brake pads
Replace in pairs, refer to Brake Pad/Service and Repair Service and Repair
Thickness (new): 12 mm (0.47 in)
Wear limit: 2 mm (0.08 in)
When pad thickness including backing plate is down to 7 mm (0.28 in), brake pads have reached their wear limit and should be replaced

3. Brake carrier with guide bolts and protective caps
Supplied as replacement part assembled with sufficient grease on the guide bolts
If the protective caps are damaged, install repair kit Part No.443 698 470
Use enclosed grease pad to lubricate guide bolts

4. Mounting bolt 65 Nm (48 ft lb)

5. Brake disc
Replace in pairs
Remove brake caliper first
Diameter: 269 mm (10.59 in)
Thickness: 20 mm (0.79 in)
Wear limit: 18 mm (0.71 in)

6. Brake caliper housing
Remove from brake carrier to replace brake pads
Do not disconnect brake hose when replacing brake pads
Piston diameter: 43 mm (1.69 in)
