Camshaft Position Sensor: Adjustments

Camshaft Position Sensor, Early Production AAN Engines:

Camshaft Position Sensor:

NOTE:The first AAN 20v turbo engines are fitted with a distributor housing, in which the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is located. All later AAN engines have the sensor located behind the camshaft sprocket and there is NO alignment or adjustment. This procedure is only for early engines WITH a distributor housing fitted.

Adjusting Camshaft Position Sensor Alignment

Cam Sprocket Timing Mark:

- Loosen or remove cam belt cover so that timing mark on camshaft sprocket can be seen.

"O" Timing Mark:

- Manually rotate engine in direction of normal operation until timing mark on camshaft aligns with timing mark behind sprocket as shown, and timing mark on flywheel is aligned on TDC.

Hall Sender Cap:

- Remove cap to expose sensor.

Hall Sender Alignment:

- With engine on TDC cylinder #1:
^ Marking on the shudder wheel must align with marking on the edge of housing.
^ Harness connector must point toward back of engine.

If the marks do not align.
- Loosen housing base clamp and turn so that marks match and retighten.

If position of harness connector varies considerably.
- Remove housing from engine and rotate shaft so that harness connector faces the rear and Hall sensor marks match after reinstallation.

Checking and Adjusting Axial Play of Camshaft Position Sensor

- Check by slightly turning rotor cowl by hand, noting whether CMP sensor shaft is easy to move.
^ Radial play must be perceptible in drive

If CMP sensor shaft sticks:
- Remove CMP sensor and install two seals, or if necessary a maximum of three, between distributor housing and cylinder head.
- During this procedure, check axial play of the CMP sensor.
^ Axial play must be 0.3 mm (0.012 in.) maximum

If axial play is greater:
- Replace Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.

If there is a lot of play in the drive:
- Check the drive pinion teeth.

If the drive pinion teeth are damaged or sheared off, perform the following tests:
- Check intake camshaft drive chain for non-permissible elongation.
- Check toothed belt tension, adjust if necessary.
- Check crankshaft front vibration damper for cracks or deformation of rubber insert, if necessary replace vibration damper.
