California has been the leader in "Clean Air" legislation since the 1960's. With the number of vehicles increasing, even more stringent rules have been put in place.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) recently adopted a new "Clean Air" program which requires manufactures to explain, in detail, the reasons for emissions related warranty repair (see attachment, pages 2-2.14 and 2-2.14a in the warranty manual). In short, the manufacturer has to report the 3 C's - the complaint, the cause and the correction. This type of information cannot be obtained from the WIN system since the damage code only deals with the replaced part.

CALIFORNIIA ONLY:

In order to fulfill our obligation, we need your help in two ways.

1. If we are requesting you to supply copies of files for previous warranty repairs, please comply as soon as possible. While we acknowledge the burden this may put on you, please understand that we have to take the information from the repair order and prepare repair histories for each vehicle.

2. To eliminate the need to copy files in the future, please initiate a plan to complete an EPOS report for each emission related warranty claim. The EPOS report allows you adequate room to fully describe the customer's complaint, your findings and ultimately what you did to correct the problem.

The EPOS report is very important. It will free you of the copying burden and allow us to supply the necessary information to the state of California. Last but not least, we will all enjoy cleaner air as a result of our support of the CARB program.
