Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
NOTE: On air bag equipped vehicles, refer to Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems), Service Precautions. Also refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.
1. Vehicles with audio coded antitheft system refer to Radio/Stereo, Service Precautions.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Slightly raise vehicle, then remove front wheels.
4. Remove cross struts for spring strut domes.
5. Remove air cleaner housing and air cleaner case.
6. Remove spark plug wire supports.
7. Remove left and right distributor caps.
8. Remove throttle cable and throttle cable support.
9. Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector.
10. Disconnect 2-pin plug connection at transmission bell housing.
11. Disconnect cable clamp and clip.
12. Disconnect ventilation hose retaining strap from firewall.
13. Loosen transmission dip stick on cylinder head.
14. Remove radiator cooling fan.
15. Remove right side engine to body mounting bolts.
16. Remove lower engine cover.
17. Remove transmission crossmember.
18. Remove front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter attached.
19. Remove driveshaft heat deflector plate.
20. Remove driveshaft, then detach selector lever cable and support bracket from transmission.
21. Remove oil filter, then the starter.
22. Remove six torque converter retaining bolts.
23. Remove transmission to frame mounting bolts on right and left side of vehicle.
24. Attach engine lifting hoist tool VW 10-222A or equivalent to engine.
25. Using transmission jack and subframe support tool VW 1584 or equivalent, support subframe.
26. Remove subframe retaining bolts, then lower subframe.
27. Disconnect axle shafts from transmission.
28. Drain transmission fluid then remove transmission filler tube.
29. Disconnect transmission lines from transmission then remove transmission line retainer.
30. Loosen bayonet catch of 8-pin connector on transmission.
31. Disconnect plug on speed sensor.
32. Push locking lever of multi-function switch downward then remove plug.
33. Remove tabs on seal belt tension cables then disconnect cables.
34. Remove speed sender and TDC sender with heat deflector plate on engine.
35. Remove upper engine to transmission retaining bolts.
36. Using transmission jack and mount 3209, support transmission.
37. Remove lower engine to transmission retaining bolts, then separate engine from transmission.
38. Lower transmission then secure converter to prevent from falling.
39. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque engine mount to body, transmission mount to subframe, transmission support to transmission and support for safety belt cables to 30 ft. lbs.
b. Torque cross brace to suspension strut domes to 17 ft. lbs., torque converter bolts to 26 ft.lbs., subframe to body bolts to 48 ft. lbs. plus an additional 1/4 turn and axle shaft to flange bolts to 59 ft. lbs.
c. Torque propeller shaft to to transmission flange bolts to 41 ft. lbs., transmission to engine bolts to 44 ft. lbs., support for selector lever cable to transmission to 7 ft. lbs. and side threaded bushings to 111 ft. lbs.
