Engine Control Module Coding

Code Engine Control Module
(VAG 1551 function 07)

Coding is carried out using the VAG 1551 scan tool.

During ECM identification, a numeric code must always be displayed on the scan tool.

If the appropriate coding for the vehicle is not displayed on VAG 1551, or if the ECM was replaced, establish ECM coding as follows:

Procedure

- Connect the VAG 1551, Refer to Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool

Function is unknown or
cannot be carried out at the moment

^ An illegal code number has been entered.

If Not:

- ECM identification with coding input (e.g. 00000) appears on the display:

8A0906266B V6 2.8 2V MPI V6 AC39 DOB
Coding 00000 WSC 06812

- Display breakdown is as follows:

^ ECM identification: 8A0 906 266 B (example)
^ Engine design: V6
^ Engine displacement: 2.8 liter
^ Number of valves per cylinder: 2 valves
^ Fuel injection system: MPI = Multi-Point Injection
^ ECM software version: V6 (EPROM status of ECM)
^ ECM hardware/software version: DOB (ECM program status)
^ Coding: 00000

- Road test

^ Driveability OK

^ Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) does not come on

- Re-check DTC memory to be sure no malfunctions stored.

Incorrect ECM coding leads to:

^ Driveability problems (jerky shifting, jolts during load changes, etc.)

^ Increased fuel consumption

^ Exhaust emission out of specification

^ Decrease in transmission life

^ Storage in DTC memory of malfunctions that do not exist

^ Some functions may become inoperative (oxygen sensor control, EVAP canister purge regulator valve, etc.)
