Scraping Noise from steering Column

Check/inspect for condition(s) described in this Bulletin when performing the initial Delivery Inspection. When necessary perform corrective action(s) as outlined prior to delivery to the customer.

Condition

Scraping noise from steering column caused by improper alignment of steering column and steering tube.

Service

CAUTION
Before disconnecting battery get radio code and record customers radio stations, or use radio memory saver.

- disconnect battery.





- remove left side knee bar.





- disconnect air bag voltage supply connector (red).
^ located in passenger foot well area, above electronic control module.

- remove steering wheel
^ front wheels must be in straight ahead position

- disconnect spiral spring connector (red),
- located on top of column behind steering wheel.

- remove cover strip underneath instrument cluster

- remove instrument cluster.

2 - Washer
3 - Bracket
4 - Washer
5 - Self locking nut
6 - Steering column, lower collapsible element
7 - Steering column, upper collapsible element
8 - Column tube

- loosen self locking nuts -5- slightly so that column tube -8- can be moved in the bracket. Do not remove the column tube from the bracket.





- install two spacer sleeve halves Part No. 4A0 419 913 where lower collapsible element -6- enters the column tube -8-. This will align the steering column with the column tube.

- tighten self locking nuts -5-
- 35 N-m (26 ft.lb.)

- remove spacer halves.

- re-install instrument cluster.

- re-install steering wheel and tighten.
- 40 N-m (30 ft.lb.)

- reconnect spiral spring connector.

- reconnect air bag voltage supply connector.

- reinstall knee bar.

- reconnect battery

- recode radio and reprogram customer's radio stations if memory saver was not used.
