Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


NOTE: On air bag equipped vehicles, refer to Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems), Service Precautions. Also refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.

1. Vehicles with audio coded antitheft system refer to Radio/Stereo, Service Precautions.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor connection.
4. On vehicles with noise insulation shield, remove shield by pulling off vacuum hoses then removing air duct and retaining bolts.
5. On vehicles with split filler tube, loosen ATF filler pipe at top and remove, then cover lower pipe with a shop towel.
6. Remove transaxle to engine upper bolts, then push up on coolant hoses.
7. Install engine support assembly tool 10-222A and 10-222A/1, or equivalent.
8. Remove engine lower cover and mounting, then remove drive axle heat shields.
9. Remove body crossmember, then the exhaust system and catalytic converters.
10. Disconnect axle shafts from transaxle, then remove starter, position aside and secure with wire.
11. Place oil pan below ATF line connection, then disconnect ATF lines and mounting bracket. Push ATF lines to one side.
12. Remove torque converter mounting nuts. Use a suitable wrench to counter hold vibration damper center bolt.
13. Remove heat shield for multi-function switch.
14. Disconnect electrical connectors, then remove wiring harness clamp.
15. Install transaxle support tool 3282, or equivalent.
16. Remove bolt from rubber/metal rear transaxle mount, then the lower engine to transaxle bolts
17. Separate transaxle from engine, then lower and remove transaxle. Push torque converter off of drive plate when removing transaxle.
18. Secure torque converter in transaxle.
19. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:

a. Inspect guide sleeves for proper alignment during installation.
b. Inspect and adjust selector lever cable is necessary.
c. Tighten to specifications.
