Camshaft Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection
Note: The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is located behind the camshaft sprocket.
- Connect VAG 1598 Test Box to Engine Control Module (ECM) and ECM harness using VAG 1598/5 adaptor cable. Refer to VAG 1598 Pin Out Box Connecting. Connecting and Testing VAG 1598 Pin Out Box
- Connect LED Tester US 1115 between terminals 8 and 12.
- Operate starter for a few seconds.
^ LED tester must blink briefly during every second engine revolution.
If NOT:
- Switch ignition OFF.
- Disconnect 3-pin CMP sensor connector at distributon.
- Switch DVOM to resistance range.
3-Pin Connector For The Camshaft Position Sensor:
- Check wires according to the wiring diagram for continuity and/or short circuit to each other, as described:
^ Short circuit: 1.0 ohm maximum.
^ Open circuit: infinite ohms .
^ Between CMP sensor connector terminal 1 and Test Box socket 19.
^ Between CMP sensor connector terminal 2 and Test Box socket 8.
^ Between CMP sensor connector terminal 3 and Test Box socket 12.
- If necessary, repair open circuit and/or short circuit in wiring between CMP sensor harness connector and ECM harness connector terminals 8, 12 and 19.
If there is neither an open circuit nor a short circuit:
- Switch DVOM to 20 volt (V) range.
- Connect multimeter to terminals 12 and 19 using adapter cables from VW 1594 adaptor kit.
- Switch ignition ON.
^ Must be 4.5 - 5.5 volts.
- Switch ignition OFF.
- Connect multimeter to terminals 8 and 19.
- Switch ignition ON.
^ Must be 4.3 - 5.2 volts.
- Switch ignition OFF.
If NOT in each case:
- Replace ECM.
If YES in each case:
- Replace Camshaft Position sensor.
