Performing Basic Setting Checks

Requirements
- Engine coolant temperature 85°C (185°F) minimum
- All electrical consumers switched OFF
- A/C switched OFF.

Procedure
- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool. Refer to Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool
- Start engine and let idle.
- Drive vehicle for a minimum 5 minutes, choosing a route that does not have any stops (if possible). Leave engine running.
- Advance through program until display appears as shown:

- Select function code.

- Display will appear as shown:

02 - Check DTC Memory

- Check DTC memory for stored codes, if there are faults stored, check and repair as necessary and erase the DTC memory. Refer to W/ VAG 1551 - Diagnostic Trouble Code Memory [1][2]Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Let engine idle.
- Press 0 and 4 buttons to select function 04 "Basic Setting"
- Display will appear as shown:

- Press Q button to enter input
- If display appear as shown:

Function unknown or -->
cannot be carried out at the moment

- Check for correct ECM version. Refer to ECM Version and Coding Programming and Relearning
- Perform checks for DTC # 00516 in Diagnostic Trouble Code Charts. Engine Control System
- Correct fault as necessary.
- Display will appear as shown:

Display Groups

VAG 1551 Display:

Basic setting has two display groups availible, display group 00 and 01

Display Group 00:
- Press 0 button two times to select basic setting display group 00.
- Press Q button to enter input
- Display will appear as shown:

- After test driving and checking DTC memory, compare the displayed values to the values in the Basic Setting Specification Charts. Basic Setting Specification Charts
- Within 5 minutes of test drive compare values in display field 9 with specified values. If the vehicle idles longer than 5 minutes, the specified value can be exceeded without a malfunction being present.
NOTES:
The scan tool does not display zeros in display group numbers.
The displayed values for channels 1 to 10 are in decimal form.
If the printer is switched ON, the current display will be printed out.
The current display will be printed out each time the PRINT button is pressed.

Display Group 01:
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select basic setting display group 01.
- Press Q button to enter input
- Display will appear as shown:

- Compare the displayed values to the values in the Specification Charts.
NOTES:
The scan tool does not display zeros in display group numbers.
If the printer is switched ON, the current display will be printed out.
The current display will be printed out each time the PRINT button is pressed.

Correct Values
If the specified values are obtained in all channels
- Press the "Arrow" button
- Display will appear as shown:
