Crankshaft Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection
- Disconnect CKP sensor harness connector (black).- Switch Digital Volt Ohm Multimeter (DVOM) to resistance range.
3-Pin Connector:
- Connect DVOM to terminals 1 and 2 using adapter cables from VW 1594.
^ Must be approximately 1000 ohms.
If NO:
- Replace CKP sensor.
If YES:
- Connect DVOM to terminals 1 and 3 and then terminals 2 and 3.
^ Both must be infinite ohms (open).
If NO:
- Replace CKP sensor.
If YES:
- Check wiring between sensor harness connector and Engine Control Module (ECM) as follows:
- Connect VAG 1598 Test Box using VAG 1598/5 adaptor cable connected to ECM wiring harness. Refer to VAG 1598 Pin Out Box Connecting. Connecting and Testing VAG 1598 Pin Out Box
^ ECM remains disconnected.
3-Pin Connector:
- Check the following terminals for continuity and/or short circuit using wiring diagrams:
^ Between sensor harness connector terminal 1 and test box socket 48.
^ Between sensor harness connector terminal 2 and test box socket 47.
^ Between sensor harness connector terminal 3 and test box socket 19 (GND).
Engine Control Module Harness Connector:
- Repair open circuit and/or short circuit in the wires between sensor harness connector and the ECM harness connector terminals 47, 48 and 19, if necessary.
If OK:
- Check sensor pin on ring gear.
- Remove bracket with CKP sensor and Engine Speed (RPM) sensor.
- Rotate engine until reference pin appears in starter opening.
- Inspect pin for looseness, damage or bent condition; replace if necessary.
If OK:
- Replace ECM.
