Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
NOTE: On air bag equipped vehicles, refer to Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems), Service Precautions. Also refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.
1. Vehicles with audio coded antitheft system refer to Radio/Stereo, Service Precautions.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then the electrical connector speedometer at transaxle.
3. Disconnect intake air duct vacuum hoses, then remove intake air duct and noise insulation.
4. On vehicles equipped with ATF filler pipe, disconnect filler pipe at top and remove. Seal filler pipe with a suitable shop towel.
5. Remove upper transaxle to engine mounting bolts.
6. Remove noise insulation from under engine, then loosen mounting bolts for torque support.
7. Install engine support bridge tool 10-222A, or equivalent, then lift engine enough to take up weight.
8. Remove front crossmember, then exhaust system.
9. Remove heat shield for left drive axle, then disconnect drive axles from transaxle and tie up.
10. Remove serpentine drive belt, alternator and stater.
11. Disconnect torque converter, then remove drive shaft.
12. Disconnect electrical connection from multi-function switch, then the 8-pin connector and cable bracket at transaxle.
13. Remove bracket for ATF lines, then disconnect transaxle to radiator ATF lines at junction block.
14. Remove bracket for selector lever cable at transaxle.
15. Install transaxle support tool 3282, or equivalent.
16. Loosen mounting nut for right side bonded rubber bushing at subframe, then disconnect right and left transaxle support at bonded rubber bushing.
17. Lower transaxle slightly and disconnect selector lever cable at selector shaft lever.
18. Remove flanged nut for cable guide, then release cable guide at transaxle and push up, along with cables.
19. Remove lower transaxle to engine mounting bolts.
20. Disconnect and lower transaxle from engine. Push torque converter off of drive plate when removing transaxle.
21. Secure torque converter in transaxle.
22. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Adjust selector lever cable.
b. Inspect ATF fluid level.
c. Inspect gear oil in final drive.
d. Adjust drive shaft.
