Fuel Pump Relay: Description and Operation

The Motronic system for the 4.2 liter V8 is equipped with two Fuel Pump Relays. They are wired in parallel with each other. The purpose of the second (redundant) relay, is to ensure reliability.

Both fuel pump relays have similar alpha-numeric identification designations (J17) in the wiring diagrams. To keep them from being confused with one another they will be referred to as fuel pump relay 1 (one) and fuel pump relay 2 (two).

Fuel Pump Relay Locations V8:

^ Fuel pump relay 1 (one) is located on the fuse/relay panel.

^ Fuel pump relay 2 (two) is located on the auxiliary relay panel located under the carpet in the passenger side footwell.

Both relays are energized by the Motronic control module and supply current to the fuel pump.
