Cooling System, Draining and Filling

WARNING: The cooling system is pressurized when the engine is warm. When opening the expansion tank, wear gloves and other appropriate protection, cover the cap using a cloth, and open carefully to relieve system pressure slowly.

REMOVAL

- Using special tool No. 3247, or equivalent, drain coolant from engine drain plug (arrow) and at drain plug on bottom left of radiator.
- Remove cap from expansion tank.

FILLING
Recommended mixing ratios:
Anti-freeze protection down to:
-25°C (-13°F): 40%
Coolant: 3.2 liter (3.4 qt.)
Water: 4.8 liter (5.1 qt.)
-35°C (-31°F): 50%
Coolant: 4.0 liter (4.2 qt.)
Water: 4.0 liter (4.2 qt.)

NOTE:
^ The cooling system is filled year-round with a mixture of water, anti-freeze, corrosion protectant G 011 A 8 C. G 011 A 8 C and coolant additives with the note "per TL VW 774 C", or equivalents. This prevents frost and corrosion damage, lime deposits and also raise the boiling temperature of the coolant. For these reasons, the coolant system must be filled year-round with anti-freeze, water and corrosion protection compounds.
^ Due to its high boiling point, the engine coolant contributes to operating efficiency when the engine is operating at full load, particularly in tropical climates.
^ If the radiator, heater core, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket have been replaced, do not re-use the old coolant.
^ Cooling system capacity: approx. 8.5 liters (9 quarts)
^ Recommended anti-freeze/water mixture ratio: 40:60

1. Close drain plug at engine block and at bottom left of radiator.
- Tighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
2. Back off each of two bleed screw approx. 2 turns.
- In coolant hose to heater core, right, next to brake booster
- Bleed screw in large coolant pipe, next to engine coolant temperature sensor.
3. Pour coolant into expansion tank.
4. Check bleed screws and close when coolant starts to run out.
5. Fill expansion tank until level reaches top edge.
6. Install cap on expansion tank.
7. Run engine at idle until coolant fan has switched on once.
8. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM for approx. 30 seconds.
9. Stop engine (switch ignition off).
10. Check coolant level in expansion tank and top up to MAX mark if necessary.
