Performing Basic Setting Checks

Requirements

- Engine coolant temperature 85°C (185°F) minimum

- All electrical consumers switched OFF

- A/C switched OFF

Procedure

- Drive vehicle for minimum of 5 minutes, choosing a route that does not include any stops (if possible)

^ Do not shut engine off.

- Let engine idle

- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool. Refer to Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool

- Advance through program until display appears as shown:

Select function XX

- Select function code.

Diagnostic Trouble Code Memory 02

- Display will appear as shown:

02 - Check DTC Memory

- Check DTC memory for stored codes, if there are faults stored, check and repair as necessary and erase the DTC memory.

- Let engine idle.

- Press 0 and 4 buttons to select function 04 "Activate basic setting"

- Display will appear as shown:

- Press Q button to enter input

- Display will appear as shown:

Example Display Group 000:

- Press 0 button three times to select "System in basic setting"

- Press Q button to enter input

NOTES:

The displayed values for channels 1 to 10 are in decimal form.

If the printer is switched ON, the current display will be printed out.

The current display will be printed out each time the PRINT button is pressed.

After approximately 2 seconds compare the channel displays with the Display Group Overview for the appropriate display group.

- After test drive and activating DTC Memory, compare the display in channel 9 with the specified values within 5 minutes

^ If the vehicle idles longer than 5 minutes, the specified value can be exceeded without a malfunction being present

^ The display in channel 10 shows the ignition angle calculated by the Engine Control Module (ECM) (J 220). With a loss of power, you should check the basic mechanical settings of the engine.

Correct Values

If the specified values are obtained in all channels

- Press the "Arrow" button

- Display will appear as shown:

- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select function 06 "End output"

- Display will appear as shown:

- Press Q button to enter input

Incorrect Values

If the specified values are not obtained in all channels refer to Display Group Diagnostic Charts for the appropriate display group.
