Ignition Lock: Service and Repair
Steering Lock Housing and Lock Cylinder, Removing and InstallingRemoving
- Remove steering wheel and steering column switches.
- Remove trim screws -2-.
- Remove trim molding -1-.
- Remove instrument cluster mounting screws (arrows).
- Carefully pull instrument cluster from instrument panel.
- Disconnect electrical connectors and remove instrument cluster.
- Remove ignition and starter switch connector.
- Remove bowden cable cover for shift lock.
- Using a screwdriver, pry off bowden cable mounting clips.
- Unhook bowden cable.
- Remove Torx (T30) screw (arrow).
Tightening torque: 7 Nm (62 in lb)
- Remove steering column mounting bolts (arrows).
Tightening torque: 35 Nm (26 ft lb)
- Pull steering column downward until steering lock housing can be removed.
WARNING!
Do not re-use any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use. Many fasteners are designed to be used only once and become unreliable and may fail when used a second time. This includes, but is not limited to, nuts, bolts, washers, self-locking nuts or bolts, circlips and cotter pins. Always follow recommendations given in this publication. Always replace these fasteners with new parts.
- Remove ignition and starter switch from steering lock housing.
- Drill one 3 mm hole approx. 1.5 mm (0.06 in.) deep in steering lock housing at location shown.
- 9.0 mm (0.35 in.)
- 12.0 mm (0.47 in.)
CAUTION!
DO NOT drill into housing too deep. Steering lock housing is only approx. 2 mm (0.08 in.) thick. Excessive drilling will cause lock cylinder damage.
- Push down retaining spring through hole (arrow -A-) using a punch or similar tool.
- Pull lock cylinder (arrow -B-) from housing.
Installing

Always replace these fasteners with new parts.
Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
- When installing lock cylinder, place in ignition OFF position (curved arrow)
- Slide cylinder in direction of straight arrows until retaining spring locks in place.
