Removal and Installation
REMOVALFig. 1 Steering Column Removal:
NOTE: On air bag equipped vehicles, refer to Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems), Service Precautions. Also refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.
1. Vehicles with audio coded antitheft system refer to Radio/Stereo, Service Precautions.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove steering wheel as outlined under Steering Wheel.
4. Remove combination switch as outlined under Combination Switch.
5. Remove lefthand lower cover from dash panel, then lefthand footwell air duct.
6. Remove instrument cluster trim mounting screws, then the instrument cluster trim.
7. Remove instrument cluster mounting bolts, then pull instrument cluster out of dash panel and disconnect electrical connectors.
8. Remove instrument cluster.
9. Remove electrical connector housing from ignition lock, then righthand and lefthand electrical harnesses steering column.
10. Disconnect universal joint from steering column, then remove mounting bolts, Fig. 1.
11. Remove steering column torx bolt with a suitable T30 insert.
12. Remove steering column mounting bolts from bracket, then the steering column from bracket.
13. Push steering column tube with steering lock down and turn to left, then pull steering lock housing out of steering column tube and remove.
14. Disconnect cable on steering column tube.
15. Pull steering column up out of dash panel and remove.
INSTALLATION
1. Install installation sleeve onto steering column corrugated tube, then slide into steering column tube to stop.
2. Slide steering column tube into position onto steering column. Distance between steering column and base of steering column tube should be 0.79 inch.
3. Install cable to steering column tube.
4. Install steering column into dash panel, then the steering lock housing.
5. Install torx screw and torque to 5 ft. lbs., then the electrical connector housing on ignition switch.
6. Install steering column tube in bracket and tighten mounting screws hand tight.
7. Insert key in ignition switch and unlock steering column.
8. Mount universal joint on to steering column. Torque bolts to 18 ft. lbs.
9. Align steering column so steering lock wheel is concentric to hole in dash panel.
10. Torque steering column tube to bracket bolts to 26 ft. lbs.
11. Remove installation sleeve, then install instrument cluster and trim.
12. Install air duct, then the lower cover.
13. Install combination switch and steering wheel.
