COMPONENT NOTES AND INFORMATION
1 Transmission Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
- Replacement, refer to Powertrain Management.
2 Right flanged shaft
3 Oil seal
- For right flanged shaft
- Replacing, refer to Right Side Seal.
4 Oil seal
- For left flanged shaft
5 Left flanged shaft
6 Magnetic ring for speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
- Replacing, refer to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
7 Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
- Replacing, refer to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators
PROCEDURE
NOTE:
^ Refer to General Repair Instructions.
^ Transmission installed
- Remove three way catalytic converters.
- Remove heat shield for drive axle.
- Disconnect drive axle from flanged shaft.
- Turn steering to full lock and tie up drive axle.
- Bend up tabs of locking washer (arrows) for flanged nut with a screwdriver and remove.
- Unscrew flanged nut for flanged shaft.
To loosen the flanged nut, screw two bolts into flanged shaft and counter-hold with assembly lever.
- Remove flanged shaft.
- Pry out oil seal for flanged shaft with screwdriver.
- Pack space between sealing lips of new oil seal with multipurpose grease.
- Drive in seal as far as stop.
- Insert flanged shaft with magnetic ring of speedometer vehicle speed sensor.
NOTE: When installing, make sure that the magnetic ring engages in the grooves of the flanged shaft.
- Attach flanged shaft with flanged nut and secure with tabs of locking washer.
- Install drive axle.
- Install three way catalytic converters, refer to Powertrain Management.
- Tightening torques:
Flanged nut of flanged shaft: 100 Nm (74 ft lb)
Drive axle to flanged shaft: 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
Heat shield to bracket: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
