Shift Mechanism, Input Shaft, Pinion, Cover: Overview







NOTE: Observe instructions at "Sequence of Operations" at Controls and Housing.

1. Shift rod with shift forks for 3rd and 4th gears
- Position of shift rod: refer to "Sequence of Operations/Shift Mechanism, Input Shaft, Pinion and Cover/Installing"
- Shift rod or shift fork can be replaced individually
- Removing bushings for shift rod (refer to "Procedures"), drive in with drift VW 295 and VW 295a
- Replace shift rod bushing if worn
2. Input shaft
3. Torx bolt for relay shaft
- 40 Nm (30 ft lb)
4. Spacer
5. Relay shaft
- Installation position: refer to "Sequence of Operations/Shift Mechanism, Input Shaft, Pinion and Cover/Installing"
6. Spacer washer
7. Torx bolt for relay shaft
- 40 Nm (30 ft lb)
8. Inner shift rod
- Installation position: refer to "Sequence of Operations/Shift Mechanism, Input Shaft, Pinion and Cover/Installing"
- Pull out inner shift-rod oil seal with VW 681
- Knock in with VW 460/2.
With transmission installed:
- Remove exhaust system and shift rod from transmission
- Carefully pry out with screwdriver
- Knock in with VW 423
- Installation position: refer to "Procedures"
9. Shift detent
- Install after installing relay shaft -5- and inner shift rod -8-
- Installation position: refer to "Sequence of Operations/Shift Mechanism, Input Shaft, Pinion and Cover/Installing"
10. Torx bolt
- 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
- With shoulder to retain spring/shift detent
11. Shift rod with shift forks for 1st, 2nd, 5th and Reverse gears
- Installation position: refer to "Sequence of Operations/Shift Mechanism, Input Shaft, Pinion and Cover/Installing"
- To disassemble and assemble, remove or install pins
- Removing and installing bracket for 1st and 2nd shift fork: refer to "Procedures"
- Shift forks for 1st and 2nd gears can be replaced individually
- Only replace 5th and Reverse gear shift fork together with shift rod and carrier
12. Pinion
13. Transmission cover
- Removing and installing oil retainer: refer to "Procedures"
- Removing sleeve for 3rd and 4th shift lever rod: refer to "Procedures"
- Drive out bushing with drift VW 295 and additional piece VW 295a
14. Transmission housing
- Removing bushing for 3rd and 4th shift lever rod: described below
- Knock in bushing with drift VW 295 and VW 295a
