Removing
NOTES:
- It is not necessary to remove the differential in order to remove the parts listed. Removal of the differential is only necessary in order to determine whether dimension "r" is marked on the ring gear. This dimension must be known if the transmission housing or the tapered roller bearings for pinion are to be replaced. If necessary, an actual measurement must be made.
- Removing differential and determining pinion installation position: refer to "Differential".
REMOVING
- Mount transmission in repair stand.
- Drain transmission oil.
- Remove clutch release lever -A- and release bearing.
- Unscrew release bearing guide sleeve -B-.
- Remove dished washer -C-.
- Remove circlip -D- in front of input-shaft ball bearing and note thickness.
- Pull ball bearing out of housing.
- A = Puller VAG 1582 and handle VAG 1582/2
Note: Position puller so that cage of bearing is not damaged.
- Remove circlip (arrow) behind ball bearing and note thick- ness.
- Unscrew bolts mounting transmission cover -A- to transmission housing -B-, and remove transmission cover.
- Remove multi-function switch (back-up light switch) (arrows).
- Remove bolts for relay shaft (arrows).
- Remove bolt for shift detent (arrow) and swing out shift detent.
- Remove input shaft -A-, pinion -B-, relay shaft -C-, shift rods -D- and shift forks -E- together.
