Airbag II System Safety Measures
AIRBAG II SYSTEM, SAFETY MEASURESCAUTION!
^ Testing, assembly and repair work on the Airbag II system must only be conducted by trained Service Department personnel.
^ Never use a test lamp, voltmeter or ohmmeter for testing the Airbag II system. (except when checking the spiral spring).
^ The Airbag II system must remain installed during testing. Use only VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) and adapter harness VAG 1551/1 to test the the Airbag II system. DO NOT use airbag tester VAG 1619 for testing.
^ Airbag system components must not be opened, disassembled or repaired. Always use new parts
^ The airbag unit has an expiration date noted on a label on the passenger's side sun visor (1993 m.y.) or driver's side doorjamb (B-pillar)(1994 m.y). After 15 years, the airbag unit must be replaced. For safety reasons, all other component parts of the Airbag II system, except the wiring harness, must also be replaced at this time.
^ If the airbag unit or control module have been dropped from a height of 0.5 m (20 in.) or more, DO NOT install.
^ Always replace any mechanically damaged (dented/cracked) airbag system component.
CAUTION!
^ Always disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap and airbag voltage sup ply (B+) connector before working on the airbag or related systems.
^ Check the Airbag Malfunction indicator Lamp (MIL) after performing any work on the airbag system. After switching the ignition on, the Airbag MIL should come on for approx. ten seconds, then switch off.
^ DO NOT leave an undeployed airbag unit unattended If work Is interrupted. Install new airbag unit Into vehicle as soon as unit is removed from packaging.
^ DO NOT store airbag units for longer than three months.
^ Always place a removed airbag unit with the horn pad facing upwards.
^ DO NOT expose airbag unit to grease/oil/ solvents or clean with any type of cleaning agent.
^ DO NOT expose an airbag unit to temperatures above 100° C (212° F), even for a brief period. Keep airbag unit away from heat sources such as heating plates, soldering irons, heat lamps, welding equipment, etc.
^ if the airbag unit has been deployed during an accident, always replace the airbag unit and control module. Check all other Airbag II system components including the spiral spring and wiring harness for mechanical damage and replace if necessary.
CAUTION!
^ The storage, transportation and disposal of airbag units are subject to the laws for flammable solids.
Disposal of airbag units and control modules
^ Active airbag units (gas generators): remove an active (not deployed) airbag unit carefully from the vehicle and return to the Warranty Parts Test Center for proper disposal. DO NOT deploy airbag in vehicle.
^ Deployed airbag units (gas generators): deployed airbag units DO NOT have to be disposed of as hazardous waste but can be discarded In the normal manner. However, It is recommended to have the unit recycled.
^ Airbag control modules which have a red Part identification Label do not contain a mercury switch and can be discarded in the normal manner. Airbag control modules which DO NOT have a red Part identification Label contain a mercury switch and must be disposed of following laws governing hazardous waste disposal.
