Air Bag Systems: Description and Operation

The air bag system is designed to supplement protection offered by seat belts in a frontal impact collision. In the Air Bag II System, driver and passenger air bags are used. The Air Bag II system incorporates an on-board diagnostic feature. Faults detected in the system are stored in the control unit memory. The fault codes can be extracted from the control unit memory using a scan tool VAG 1551. The Air Bag III system also features an air bag control module with expanded on-board diagnosis capability, an optimized passenger air bag and pyrotechnic seat belt tensioner system.
