VAG 1551 Scan Tool, Connection and Use

Scan Tool VAG 1551,
connecting/reading DTC Memory/erasing DTC Memory/ending output

Notes:

^ The DTC Memory can only be erased after the reading sequence is completed.

^ The main program of the ABS Control Module - J104 is deactivated during OBD, so the systems are not operative

Reading DTC Memory:

^ Observe test requirements.

V.A.G. 1551 Scan Tool Connections:





Connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 to Data Link Connectors (DLC's) in relay carrier on left side of plenum chamber using harness VAG 1551/1

- Connect black connector to black DLC.

Note:
If no display appears, check voltage supply for black DLC. Refer to Data Link Connectors, Checking Wiring

V.A.G. 1551 Scan Tool Display:





Framed text appears on display;

* appears alternately

- Connect white connector to white DLC.

Note:
The blue plug is not required.

- Switch on ignition.

Notes:

^ The HELP button on VAG 1551 can be used to call up additional operating instructions.

^ The -> button is used to advance to the next step in the program.

^ The printer can be switched on by pressing the Print button (indicator light comes on in button)

^ Press button 1 for "Rapid data transfer" mode

Display appears as shown:

- Press buttons 0 and 3.

(03 enters address word "Brake electronics").

- Confirm input with button Q

Control Module identification appears on display.

Display appears as shown:

Notes:

^ The "D"suffix in the Control Module identification indicates an ABS Control Module with wheel speed outputs (e.g. vehicles with automatic transmission); the absence of a suffix indicates no wheel speed outputs.

^ Also check parts list for identification of appropriate ABS Control Module - J104.

If Display appears as shown:

Control Module does not answer!

OR

K-wire not switching to Ground/positive
HELP


OR

No signal from Control Module

- Press HELP button to print out a list of possible causes.

- Check wiring connection of Data Link Connectors, Refer to Data Link Connectors, Checking Wiring.

- Check power supply and Ground connection to Control Module - J104 using wiring diagram

- After correcting possible malfunctions enter address word 03 for brake electronics once again and verify with Q button.

If Display appears as shown:

Fault in communication buildup

- Refer to Data Link Connectors, Checking Wiring, to correct possible malfunctions.

- Press -> button.

Display appears as shown:

- Press button 0 and 2. This selects the function "Read DTC Memory"

Display appears as shown:

- Acknowledge input with Q button

Display appears as shown:

X malfunctions recognized! ->

Display indicates the number of stored malfunctions or message "No malfunction recognized".

- Press -> button.

The DTCs stored in the memory are now displayed and printed out one after the other.

- Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code Tables to Determine possible malfunctions.

- Press -> button after last DTC has been displayed and printed out.

Notes:

^ If a malfunction has been recognized: select function 06 to end output, switch off ignition and repair malfunction. Then read DTC Memory again and erase.

^ If a malfunction is present in the system that is not identified by the OBD routine: perform troubleshooting with ABS tester VAG 1710.

Erasing DTC Memory and ending output

Display appears as shown:

- Press buttons 0 and 5. This selects the function "Erase DTC Memory"

If Display appears as shown:

Attention!
DTC Memory was not read


There has been an interuption in reading the DTC memory.

Notes:

^ Keep to the specified sequence exactly: i.e. read DTC Memory before erasing.

^ The DTC Memory cannot be erased if, for instance, the ignition is switched off after reading the memory and before erasing, or if the vehicle is moved at a speed above 20 km/h.

After reading the memory display appears as shown:

- Press -> button.

- Press buttons 0 and 6
(06 ends output).

- Switch off ignition.

- Disconnect connectors for Scan Tool V.A.G. 1551.

- Switch on ignition (ABS Warning Light - K47 must go out after a short time).

- Perform road test: increase speed above 30 km/h at least once (ABS Warning Light - K47 must not come on again).
