Industrial fallout, removal from paint finish

This Technical Bulletin supercedes Technical Bulletin, Group 50, No. 93-O2, August 31, 1993.

Condition

Industrial fallout consists of small airborne, mostly metallic particles that settle onto the paint surface. Rubbing your hand across the clean surface will reveal a gritty texture.

Vehicles damaged by industrial fallout can be restored using the procedure described in this Technical Bulletin.

Service

WARNING
Before using any chemicals or cleaning compounds, carefully read all of the cautions and medical information on the container. Always follow all of the manufacturer's recommendations.

The following three steps MUST be followed IN SEQUENCE to restore contaminated paint finish.

Use ONLY the specified materials.

Note
Use separate wash mitts and towels for each step. Do not mix mitts/towels or Finish Kare(R) products.

Step 1: Surface preparation and particle removal

- Wash vehicle, use Finish Kare(R), Product No. 1119 (locally available) and water

^ ratio: 4 parts water

1 part Finish Kare(R) 1119

- Apply Finish Kare(R) 1119 solution to entire vehicle using a clean, dry wash mitt. Start at bottom of vehicle and work up to top surfaces.

CAUTION
Keep vehicle surfaces wet with the solution at all times. Do not allow the product to dry on the vehicle or to streak down the sides.

- After all panels have been wetted, agitate surfaces using a clean towel. Reapply solution during agitation.

- Keep vehicle wet with solution for 3 to 5 minutes

- Power/pressure wash vehicle with cold water

- Dry vehicle

Step 2: Particle and Oxidation Removal

- Apply fallout remover, Finish Kare(R) Product No. 883 (locally available) to affected areas

- Apply remover to entire vehicle using a clean wash mitt

CAUTION
Keep vehicle surfaces wet with the solution at all times. Do not allow the product to dry on the vehicle or to streak down the sides.

- After all panels have been wetted, agitate surfaces using a clean towel. Reapply solution during agitation.

- Allow up to 5 minutes time for solution to remove fallout

- Power/pressure wash vehicle with cold water

- Dry vehicle

- Inspect vehicle paint finish. If paint texture is still gritty, repeat Step 2.

Step 3: Neutralization and Final Cleaning

- Wash vehicle thoroughly with a solution of Finish Kare(R) Product No. 118 SC (locally available) and water

^ ratio: 128 parts water

1 part Finish Kare(R) 118 SC
(i.e. 1 oz. 118 SC to 1 gallon of water)

- Wash vehicle with clear water then dry completely

- Inspect vehicle. If paint is still contaminated (gritty), repeat application

If the paint finish appears hazy or dull after the contaminants are removed, refer to Product Circular titled "Acid Rain Spots on Paint", Group 50, No. 89-04, dated August 18, 1989.
