Checking Output Diagnostic Test Mode
Test requirements
- Fuses OK (per wiring diagram)
- Ignition switched on
Activation sequence:
Solenoid valves 1-8 (-N88- through -N94- and -N186-) are activated first, then the convertible top hydraulic pump relay -J321- is activated.
NOTES:
- Switch the ignition on before activating the Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Fully open or fully close the convertible top before activating Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Once the output DTM is activated, convertible top operation is locked out and top cannot be moved until sequence has finished.
- Check all 8 solenoid valves and the convertible top hydraulic pump relay are for an audible click during output DTM.
- If the convertible top control module -J256- recognizes a malfunction during output DTM, a DTC will be stored.
- Connect VAG1551 scan tool and advance through program sequence until "Select function XX" is indicated on display. Power Convertible Top
If "Function is unknown or cannot be carried out at the moment" is displayed:
Function is unknown or ->

- Press -> button.

NOTE: If the previous two displays were indicated, switch ignition off, then back on before selecting function -03-, Output Diagnostic Test Mode.
- Check and erase DTC memory.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Solenoid valve 1-N88
Solenoid valve 1-N88- is triggered, one audible click should be heard.
NOTES:
- Each component is switched "on" only once. The component is switched "off" when the -> button is pressed on the VAG1551 scan tool.
- Install solenoid valves only when valve is activated (power on). The output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) can be used to activate valves prior to installation.
- Each solenoid valve is triggered until the output DTM is ended (by pressing the -C- button) or until the -> button is pushed.
- An audible click may not be heard when a solenoid valve is switched off.
If a solenoid valve is not triggered:
- Check wiring to solenoid valve for open or short circuit according to wiring diagram.
- Check triggering of solenoid valve. Power Convertible Top Sequence Test
- Press -> button to switch solenoid valve 1 off.

No component is triggered.

Solenoid valve 2 -N89- is triggered; one audible click should be heard.
- Press -> button to switch solenoid valve 2 off.

Continue pressing -> button to check solenoid valves 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 in succession ending with solenoid valve 8.

Solenoid valve 8 -N186- is triggered; one audible click should be heard.
- Press -> button to switch solenoid valve 8 off.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Convertible Top Hydraulic Pump Relay-J321
Hydraulic pump relay -J321- is triggered for 1 second. If convertible top hydraulic pump -V118- does not run:
- Check fuse S24, hydraulic pump and wiring to relay and pump per wiring diagram.
- Press -> button.
- Check and erase DTC memory.
