Adaptation (Function 10)

Adaptation
(VAG 1551 function 10)

When selecting "Adaptation" function 10 and channel 01, the ECM executes the same operations as in the "Basic Setting" function O4:

^ Constant ignition timing angle of 12 BTDC in closed throttle position

^ Idle Speed Control (ISC) system adjustment of ignition timing point is blocked

^ The EVAP canister purge regulator valve remains closed

^ A/C compressor is switched OFF

^ The EGR valve remains in the closed position

^ The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) signal is ignored; the ECM assumes a constant value of 80°C (176°F)

^ Command is given for the Oxygen Sensor (O2S) control system to "learn" new values

Currently channels 01 and 02 can be selected; channel 01 is used to adjust CO content; channel 02 has no function.

On vehicles with Oxygen Sensor (02S) control (coding 00000 to 00008, see ECM coding), if the stored adaptation values for channels 01 and 02 are changed by entering other adaptation values, this change will have no effect on the engine management system.

Procedure

On vehicles with O2S control, the O2S, EVAP and EGR systems can be deactivated by using ECM codings 009, 010, or 011.

- Connect the VAG 1551, Refer to Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool

- After the display appears as shown:

- Press buttons 1 and 0 to select "Adaptation" function 10.

- Display will appear as shown:

- Press Q button to confirm input.

- Display will appear as shown:

Enter Channel Number XX

- Press buttons 0 and 1 to select channel 1.

- Display will appear as shown:

Enter Channel Number 01

- Press Q button to confirm input.

- Display will appear as shown:

Key to display:

^ Channel number (channel 1)

^ Adaptation (factory-stored adaptation value is displayed)

^ The "arrow" button (used for advancing in sequence to enter adaptation value directly)

^ Button 1 is used to reduce adaptation value

^ Button 3 is used to increase adaptation value

Note:

^ To insert another channel number, press the C button to switch back to the last display.

^ Adaptation value 128 is the average value stored by the factory.

^ Reducing the factory-stored adaptation value (128) leans the mixture (CO content drops), increasing the factory-stored adaptation value richens the mixture (higher CO content).

^ Any reductions or increases of the adaptation value must remain in the tolerance range 110-150.

Adaptive learning sequence

From Display:

Channel 1 Adaptation 128 -->

- Press <-- 1 button.

Adaptation value drops.

- Display will appear as shown:

Adaptation value increases.

Note:

^ The appropriate adaptation value and the 10 measurements are displayed as in "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08, display group 000.

^ If the modified adaptation is not going to be stored, switch back the the previous display by pressing the C button

- Press Q button to confirm input.

- Display will appear as shown:

- Press Q button to confirm input.

- Input five digit adaptation value.

^ Example using an adaptation value of 00120.

- Display will appear as shown:

- Press Q button to confirm input.

Note:
