Flex Plate: Service and Repair
CAUTION:^ Driveplate installation must include a careful alignment as described by the procedure and specifications below.
^ Improper alignment can cause the driveplate to crack
^ Before installing the engine, make sure there is a pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft. If not, one must be installed first, before installing the driveplate.
^ Replacement short blocks are supplied WITHOUT a pilot bushing.
- Install crankshaft holding tool 3242, refer to Engine.
- Mark positions of shim -1-, washer -2- and driveplate, relative to crankshaft.
CHECKING CLEARANCE
CAUTION: Part numbers are listed for reference only. Always check with your Parts supplier for the latest information.
- Install driveplate with shim -1-, using one of two available thicknesses, and washer -2-.
- Shim -1-, Part No. 054 105301, or equivalent: 3 mm (0.118 inch)
- Shim -1-, Part No. 054 105 303:, or equivalent 4 mm (0.157 inch)
- Washer-2-, Part No. 035 105 303A, or equivalent
- Tighten driveplate mounting bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
- Check clearance -a- between driveplate and cylinder block in 3 places, and calculate average value.
Vehicles with 01N transmission:
- Dimension -a-: 21.3-22.9 mm (0.839-0.902 inch)
If clearance is not correct, install different size shim(s) as necessary.
- When driveplate-to-cylinder block clearance is OK, install driveplate mounting bolts:
- Always replace bolts (coated with locking compound)
- Tightening torque: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) plus 1/4-turn (90°)
- Remove crankshaft holding tool 3242.
- Reinstall Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP).
Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
