Engine: Service and Repair

1. Obtain radio security code, then disconnect battery ground cable. Battery is under rear seat.
2. Remove left side footwell trim, Fig. 2, then the heater duct for driver's side area under dash panel by removing right hand screw and loosening left hand screw. Unclip floor lamp and push through opening.
3. Remove control units with brackets. Only one control unit on models with manual transmission.
4. Open locking mechanisms on control unit connectors and disconnect harness connectors. Lock control unit connectors to ensure they don't become tangled when removing electrical harness.
5. Disconnect connector Nos. 11, 13 and 15, numbers are marked on wiring harness. Connector No. 11 is not installed on models with manual transmission.
6. Press latch on butterfly connector lock, slide butterfly in transverse direction to panel, then release connector housing from panel and remove.

7. Remove wiper arms and plenum chamber cover, then lift up rubber grommet on middle wiring harness, Fig. 3.
8. Remove cable tie, then pull wiring harness carefully out of passenger compartment and plenum chamber.
9. Open expansion tank cap, then remove sound insulation from underneath front of vehicle.
10. Remove bumper retaining nuts.
11. Remove fog and headlamp assemblies, disconnect connector on long member in front of windshield washer reservoir on right side, then pull bumper forward to remove.

12. Drain coolant from radiator and engine, Fig. 4.
13. Remove oil cooler hoses from oil filter housing.
14. Remove transmission oil cooler bottom hose.
15. Remove A/C line retaining bracket from A/C compressor, then disconnect engine ground cable at engine.

16. Disconnect connector No. 1 for headlamp washer system, Fig. 5.
17. Disconnect A/C harness connector No. 2, Fig. 5, then A/C compressor connector N0. 3. Two green plugs on long member.
18. Disconnect coolant temperature sensor harness connector.
19. Disconnect cooling air duct from alternator, then remove coolant hose.
20. Disconnect headlight washer hose, then the windshield washer pump.
21. Disconnect low washer fluid warning switch, then the outer half of air intake elbow for alternator.
22. Disconnect alternator wiring harness, then the starter wiring harness.
23. Remove upper bolt on starter by guiding a 10 mm allen socket with extension and flex fitting through opening on transmission housing over final drive, then the lower bolt and starter. Place starter on engine block.
24. On models with automatic transmission, remove oil filter.
25. On all models, remove front pipe.

26. Disconnect oxygen sensor and wiring, then remove bolts above and below long member on left and right sides, Fig. 6.
27. Remove bolts for cadmium strip from both fenders, then the bolts on fender.
28. Disconnect electrical connector for temperature sensor, then the hood release cable.
29. Open fuse box on left side behind hydraulic reservoir, then disconnect wire to fan and ground wire at top of McPherson strut.
30. Expose wiring, then remove A/C dryer with bracket.
31. Remove intake manifold bracket on left and right side of engine, then pull out exchanger and remove reinforcement strut.
32. Remove condenser retaining bolts then swivel condenser downward. Ensure electrical wiring remains connected.
33. Remove wiring bracket from top of transmission cooler.

34. Remove heater hoses from right and left side of engine, Fig. 7.
35. Remove bleeder hose from expansion tank on radiator.
36. Remove caps on cover plate, cover plate bolts, then pull off cover plate towards front.
37. Remove screws retaining upper part of air cleaner housing, then the screws retaining lower part of air cleaner housing, press toward rear and lift out.
38. Remove righthand stud from air cleaner housing, then the carbon canister hose from front of engine.
39. Remove fuel supply and return lines from righthand side and release fuel hoses at lefthand side.
40. Loosen connections between fuel lines and hose, then turn fuel lines to left and lay to one side.
41. Remove coolant hose to expansion tank then disconnect HT wire and connector from ignition coil at left and right.
42. Remove bolts retaining ignition coil at left, cable housing and retaining clip. Observe spacer sleeve.
43. Pull wiring harness through contact plate and place on engine.
44. Remove right and left side heat shields.
45. Remove housing for ignition wire retainer, then disconnect vacuum hose from intake manifold at right side near sheet metal, under ignition wires.
46. Remove distributor caps with wires attached and secure to PCV hose using tie wraps.
47. Disconnect throttle cable and throttle cable support bracket.
48. Unscrew both coolant hoses, then disconnect supporting clamp.
49. Disconnect vacuum line from vacuum unit for cruise control system.
50. On models with automatic transmission, remove transmission oil fill tube retaining bolt from engine.
51. Remove six flywheel to torque converter attaching bolts through starter opening.
52. On all models, remove serpentine drive belt.
53. Remove A/C compressor retaining bolts, then place compressor on top of strut with A/C lines still attached.
54. Remove air conditioner compressor bracket and power steering pump retaining bolts. Observe guide sleeves.
55. Place bracket with power steering pump on long member with lines attached.
56. Remove engine mount retaining nuts and engine support retaining bolts.
57. Remove three of four engine to transmission retaining bolts at top of bellhousing. Loosen fourth bolt, but do not remove.
58. Attach lifting hook 2024 A or equivalent at front lefthand and rear righthand.
59. Attach engine hoist and lift engine carefully, then remove fourth engine to transmission retaining bolt.
60. Remove engine mounts on right and left side of engine, then raise engine and pull forward to remove.
61. Reverse procedure to install, torquing nuts and bolts to specifications.
