Note: Before installing a new belt, the rollers and tensioners must be checked for dirt, rough running and ease of rotation. Clean or replace rollers and tensioners as necessary.

- fit toothed belt at crankshaft and install vibration damper with toothed belt on crankshaft
- reinstall four securing bolts
- hand tighten only

- apply locking sealant AMV 188 001 02 to center bolt and tighten by hand
- use holding tool 3197
- install camshaft sprockets (must be left loose on camshaft tapers) with mounting bolts loosened one turn

- install vibration damper locking device 3211

Note: If there is NO hole in the vibration damper to accept special tool VAG 3211 you MUST manually ensure that the TDC mark on the vibration damper is aligned with the TDC pointer BEFORE AND AFTER tightening the camshaft sprockets.

Caution! Tool 3211 must not be used as a holding tool to tighten center bolt

- guide toothed belt into position on all sprockets and water pump pulley
- install idler pulley with eccentric

Caution! Only tighten nut (arrow) as far as the eccentric can be turned

- fully tighten four vibration damper securing bolts
- 25 Nm (18 ft lb)

- insert tool 3204 into tensioner lever so that tool engages recess on back of stop plate

- firmly press tensioner lever once by hand in direction of arrow
- engine code PT

- perform basic setting of toothed belt tensioner by turning idler pulley eccentric in clockwise direction using tool US 4493

- turn eccentric with 2587 until damper length a is:
- 136-139 mm (5.3-5.4 in)
- tighten idler pulley eccentric to 25 Nm (18 ft lb)

Caution! Tool 3199 must not be used tool when tightening camshaft bolt

- tighten camshaft sprockets to 45 Nm (33 ft lb)
- take out camshaft locating flange 3199
