Camshaft Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection

VOLTAGE TEST

- With the ignition OFF.

- Disconnect both power output sates at the ignition coils

- Disconnect plug from distributors hall effect unit.

- Connect a DVOM to terminals 1 and 3 of the distributor harness.

- Turn the ignition on and check voltage reading.

^ Must be 4.5 - 5.5 volts

- Turn ignition OFF

- Connect DVOM to terminals 2 and 3 of the distributor harness.

- Turn the ignition on and check voltage reading.

^ Must be 4.3 - 5.2 volts

- Turn ignition OFF

- If voltages are not correct check wiring continuity using the procedure in this article.

SIGNAL TEST

- Pull back boot on connector for distributor unit.

- Reconnect the distributor unit.

- Disconnect both power output stages at the ignition coils.

- Back probe the connector at terminals 1 and 2 with an LED tester.

- Crank engine and the LED must flash every other engine revolution.

- If voltages are correct but LED does not flash, replace hall effect unit in distributor.

WIRING TEST

- Turn Ignition OFF

- Disconnect the ECM harness connector.

- Disconnect the distributor harness connector.

- Check the continuity of each wire from the distributor harness connector to the ECM harness connector using the list of terminal assignments.

^ Must be 0 - 0.5 ohms

- If wiring is correct but voltages are not correct replace ECM.
