Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool
Requirements
- Fuse 27 OK
- Fuse 29 OK
^ If not see Electrical Testing with VAG 1598 Electrical Tests with VAG 1598
- Selector lever and indicator at position "P or "N".
- Ignition switched OFF
- Ground connections OK.
Connecting VAG 1551:
Procedure
- Switch OFF ignition
- Remove floor covering in footwell on passenger side to expose the Data Link Connectors (DLC)'s
Connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 using adaptor cable VAG 1551/1 to DLC.
- First connect black adaptor cable connector (voltage supply) to DLC # 1. These displays appear alternately as shown:

1 - Rapid data transfer
OR
VAG self-diagnosis HELP
2 - Blink code output
Note: Do not connect the white adaptor cable connector if there is no display. Instead, check the voltage supply for the scan tool, Refer to Data Link Connector / Testing and Inspection.
- Connect white adaptor cable connector to DLC # 2.
^ The blue connector is not used
- To obtain additional operating instructions press the HELP button.
- To step through the program sequence, press the "arrow" button
Selectable Functions
- Switch ON ignition.
- Press button 1 to select operating mode "Rapid data transfer", Display will appear as follows:

Enter address word XX
After selecting operating mode Rapid data transfer select diagnostic function.
- Transmission Electronics 02
- Press 0 and 2 buttons to select address word 02 "Transmission electronics".Display will appear as follows:

- Press Q button to enter input. The transmission control module identification number is indicated via the display, for example: 441 927 156C. Display will appear as follows:

- Press (arrow) button. If display appears as follows:

TCM does not answer\
- Print out a list of possible causes by pressing the VAG 1551 HELP button
^ If after eliminating possible causes the TCM still does not answer:

Testing for TCM at DTC # 65535
Tesing for Multifunction swith at DTC # 00293 [1][2]Engine Control System
Refer to Electrical Diagrams to:
VCheck wiring connections from DLC # 2 to the TCM and ECM.
- After eliminating cause, reselect operating mode and address word, display appears as follows:

- Select function code.

- Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Memory 02
- Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) 03
- Intiate Basic Setting 04
- Erase DTC Memory 05
- End Output 06
- Press Q button to enter input and see the proper procedure article for your selection.
Note: If function 02 Check DTC memory is to be selected
- Switch on the printer using the print button, lamp in print button lights
- When the printer is switched ON stored malfunctions are automatically printed out in sequence
