With VAG 1551 Scan Tool

OUTPUT DIAGNOSIS TEST MODE

^ When Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) has been selected via the Scan Tool, all fuel injectors, the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, and the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) solenoid valve can be checked audibly or by touch.

^ Injectors are activated in pairs five times for two milliseconds.

^ Avoid background noise during audible check of injectors. The clicking sound from the injectors is very soft and short.

^ The Output DTM will be interrupted if engine is started or if a speed pulse is detected.

^ If correct injector is activated, it is possible to verify that component is operating by touching or listening.

^ Injectors are activated in pairs during Output DTM, 1 & 5, 2 & 7, 3 & 6 and 4 & 8.

Output DTM activation sequence

1 Fuel Injector (N 30) for #1 cylinder
2 Fuel Injector (N 31) for #2 cylinder
3 Fuel Injector (N 32) for #3 cylinder
4 Fuel Injector (N 33) for #4 cylinder
5 Fuel Injector (N 83) for #5 cylinder
6 Fuel Injector (N 30) for #6 cylinder
7 Fuel Injector (N 84) for #7 cylinder
8 Fuel Injector (N 85) for #8 cylinder
9 IAC Valve (N 71)
10 EVAP Solenoid Valve 1 (N 80)

Procedure

- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool, refer to Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool. Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks

- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select address word 01 "Engine electronics and continue switching until display appears as shown:

Note: Press the HELP button to print a list of possible malfunctions.

- Press buttons 0 and 3 to select function 03 "Output Diagnostic Test Mode".

- Display will appear as shown:

- Press Q button to enter input.

Injector Cylinder 1 - N 30

Throttle Lever:

- Open and release throttle via lever (arrow).

- When throttle returns to idle position, injector for cylinder 1 will cycle ON and OFF 5 times.

- Confirm that fuel injector for cylinder 1 is activated by touch or 5 audible "clicks".

- Two injectors will be activated, see activation sequence.

After that, the Motronic ECM automatically switches to the next injector, which will be displayed approx. 50 seconds later on the Scan Tool. After the current injector data is displayed it can also be checked as described.

To switch to the next injector without testing,

- Press "Arrow" button each time.

- Check all 8 injectors this way, see activation sequence.

- Press "Arrow" button.

- Display will appear as shown:

Idle stabilizer valve - N 71

The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve is triggered (clicks) until switched to the next Output check using the "Arrow" button.

Solenoid 1 for carbon cannister - N 80

This valve is triggered (clicks) until switched to the next output check using the "Arrow" button.

If function O3 "Output Diagnostic Test Mode" is selected again, the Output check can be repeated. If one of the components does not click, check component and/or ECM.
