Without VAG 1551 Scan Tool
OUTPUT DIAGNOSIS TEST MODEOutput Diagnosis Test Mode (DTM) is provided to check the mechanical motion and the electrical wiring of certain actuators.
A Blink Code is displayed via the MIL or LED to identify the component the ECM is operating.
The actuators are checked acoustically or by touch. In some cases it might be necessary to use an LED tester for the fuel injectors, as the clicking sound from the injectors is very soft and short. Avoid background noise during audible check of the injectors.
When an audible "click" is heard from the actuator being tested, this only confirms that there is electrical current to the actuator and that the component is operating mechanically. The audible noise does not guarantee perfect component operation. Additional testing may be necessary.
This function can only be carried out with the engine OFF (not running) and the ignition switch turned ON. The Output DTM will be interrupted if the engine is started or if a speed pulse is detected.
COMPONENT CODE AND ACTIVATION SEQUENCE
^ 4411 Fuel Injector cylinder # 1
^ 4412 Fuel Injector cylinder # 2
^ 4413 Fuel Injector cylinder # 3
^ 4414 Fuel Injector cylinder # 4
^ 4421 Fuel Injector cylinder # 5
^ 4422 Fuel Injector cylinder # 6
^ 4423 Fuel Injector cylinder # 7
^ 4424 Fuel Injector cylinder # 8
^ 4431 Idle Air Control Valve
^ 4343 Evaporative Emission Frequency Valve
^ 4312 EGR Frequency Valve
^ 4334 Heated Oxygen Sensor Control Module
The Fuel Injectors are activated in pairs, 5 times for 2 milliseconds during DTM. The activation sequence is repeated a second time so that all the injectors can be checked.
The EGR Valve is only installed on California emissions equipped vehicles, but will always be activated during DTM checking even if not installed.
SET-UP PROCEDURE
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
Data Link Connectors V8:
2. Remove floor covering in passenger side footwell to expose the auxiliary relay panel and the Data Link Connectors (DLC).
Extracting Diagnostic Trouble Codes Using LED Test Light:
3. Connect jumper wire with suitable flat-blade connectors and center bridge connector to lower terminals of black DLC 1 and white/brown DLC 2 as shown in image, do not connect bridge connector at this time.
Do-It-Yourself LED Test Light:
4. Connect LED test light, (if needed) to terminals of DLC 1 and 4 using suitable flat-blade connectors. Connect LED tester black lead (-) to the occupied terminal of yellow DLC 4 and LED tester red lead (+) to upper terminal of black DLC 1.
^ California vehicles use jumper wire with bridge connector only, display is via the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
5. Check that fuses 27 and 24 in the fuse/relay panel are OK.
OUTPUT DIAGNOSIS TEST MODE ACTIVATION PROCEDURE
1. Connect jumper wire bridge connectors (A and B) together.
2. Turn ignition switch ON.
^ MIL or LED tester and ALL the display elements on the transmission position indicator in the dash must light up.
^ IF NOT:
^ Check if ignition switch is ON
^ Check LED tester connections
^ Check wires from DLC 2 and 4 to the Motronic ECM
^ Check wires from DLC 2 and 4 to the Transmission Control Module (TCM)
3. Disconnect jumper wire bridge connector (A and B) after approximately 10 seconds.
^ MIL or LED tester should start to blink.
^ At this time the transmission position indicator will show only 3rd gear, this confirms ECM in "limp home mode".
4. Count and record codes as they are displayed on the MIL or LED tester, refer to the component activation list for code I.D.
5. From engine compartment, open and release throttle valve (arrow).
^ When throttle returns to idle position, cylinder # 1 injector will begin clicking on and off.
6. Confirm cylinder # 1 injector is activated, touch or listen for audible "clicks".
7. The Motronic ECM will automatically switch to the next injector (# 2) and begin activating it. The component code will be displayed approximately 30 seconds later on the MIL or LED tester. This process will continue until all 8 injectors have been activated.
^ To switch to the next injector without checking, (skip one) connect the jumper wire bridge connectors (A and B) together for at least 4 seconds and then separate, code of component now being activated will display.
Intake Air Temperature Sensor V8:
8. After the Motronic ECM activates injector # 8, it will automatically switch to the next component on the activation sequence list, (see activation sequence above) which is the Idle Air Control Valve. To activate it connect bridge connectors (A and B) together for at least 4 seconds, then separate.
^ The idle air control valve will activate (click) until the ECM is switched to the next component.
Evaporative Emission Frequency Valve:
9. Connect the bridge connectors together for at least 4 seconds then separate as before, the ECM will switch and begin activating the Evaporative Emission Frequency Valve (located on right fender behind coolant recovery tank).
EGR Frequency Valve V8:
10. Connect the bridge connectors together for at least 4 seconds then separate as before, the ECM will switch and begin activating the EGR Frequency Valve (located on the left fuel rail).
^ EGR is only installed on California vehicles but will always be displayed during Output DTM checking even if not installed. For non-California cars continue to step 11.
Oxygen Sensor Heater Relay Location V8:
11. Connect the bridge connectors together for at least 4 seconds then separate as before, the ECM will switch and begin activating the Heated Oxygen Sensor Control Module (located in position 11 of the auxiliary relay panel, just above the DLC).
CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE MEMORY
1. Once all components have been successfully checked, connect the bridge connectors together for at least 4 seconds then separate as before, code 0000 (end of output) will display on the MIL or LED tester.
^ Code 0000 display --- 2.5 second flash (zero) at 2.5 second intervals.
2. After display of code 0000 has been achieved, the DTC memory may be cleared. If you DO NOT want to erase the DTC memory, or want to view the stored codes again, turn the ignition switch OFF. However, to clear the codes left in DTC memory AFTER the ignition has been turned OFF, you must once again complete both trouble code extraction AND diagnostic test mode procedures before the codes can be erased. To clear DTC memory, continue to step 3.
3. After display of code 0000 has be achieved, the DTC memory may be cleared by once again connecting the jumper wire bridge connectors (A and B) together for at least 4 seconds then separate. The DTC memory is now CLEAR.
4. After clearing the DTC memory, test drive vehicle for at least 5 minutes (minimum).
5. Activate DTC memory to ensure no new codes have been generated. If no new codes are present, code 4444 will display to confirm.
